Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) is small tree or shrub, growing up to 5 m tall. The species prefers forest margins and grows in sunny and open spaces, adaptable to different soil conditions. The dark bark has numerous thorns, the leaves are oval, 2–4 cm long. The white flowers appear in late winter, before the leaves. The fruit is a drupe approximately 1 cm in diameter and purple in colour.
These sloes are edible although sour, they are rich in vitamin C and are used in many recipes such as jams, wine and cakes.
